Brief History of the Department:

Lakhipur College came into existence on August 10, 1981. English, being a compulsory core subject also shared the time of the inception of the college. Since that memorable day of establishment, the department has been playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of a vast majority of young aspirants of the country. Dr. Abdullah Salrhuddin was the first teacher of this department. who headed the department till his retirement.. in the venture period Mr. R C Nath who is now an ACS officer and Dr. Sanjay Shingh who is now serving Maybang College have rendered their services to the department. In 1996 the college has been provincialised and in the same year Dr. Lalon Kishore Shingh and Mrs. Himani Devi joined the department. Subsequently, the department introduced Major course in that glorious year . In the year 2001, Dr. L K Shingh who is now designated as a professor in the Department of English , Gauhati university had left the department to join Bodoland University and Dr. Kashyap Bishwas joined the department who became the principal of the college in January,2024. Later , Mr. Imran Mozid joined the department in December, 2002.

Presently the department has two full time teachers and considering the teacher-student ratio part time teachers are being appointed by the college authority. Though the existing number of full time teachers is inadequate, the teachers of the department are sincerely engaged mainly in teaching-learning process and research activities.

Student Profile
Students are enrolled on the basis of their higher secondary result. Students largely come from rural areas with poor and average socio-economic background. Students are mostly proficient in Assamese and the dialects of the linguistic communities they belong to. Their knowledge of English is mostly poor so far as their communicative abilities are concerned. However, gradual development is being marked among them.

Courses / Programmes

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati. Hence, the college has no role to play in the mechanism of changes in courses or programmes. In the recent past the University syllabi were modified to make them more relevant and updated in 2023-24 by introducing the NEP system. The department has adopted NEP with effect from 2023-24 academic session.

Participation of teachers in academic and personal counseling of students

Apart from the classroom teaching the teachers schedule sessions to interact with the students for discussing their study related problems and other issues. In addition the teachers of the department provide personal guidance to the students. All teachers monitors the students as mentors. Outgoing bright students are encouraged to pursue higher education and others are guided according to their taste and abilities recognized by the teachers. Sessions on career counseling for the students of language studies and humanities are organized time to time by inviting resource persons from outside.
